Not signing a credit card – best thing you can do to prevent theft?
Surprised some people did not like my answer.
For 10 years of credit usage I have never signed a credit card.
Money Magazine, Kiplingers, Consumer Adivser Money, Smart Money
all say never to sign the back.
Why should you sign a credit card? Benefit?
I don’t think merchants even look.
It is not a law. If a merchant is picky and turns it down at the store – I will sign it then.
This is a foreign idea to me.
Please explain why you feel it is important to sign the back.
Thank you in advance for your responses – greatly appreciate the opposing view which I never thought of.
A thief can easily see your signature in the back and just fake it on the slip of paper (receipt).
I find it hard to believe that ANY of those have actually advised to not sign the back of credit cards. You’re going to have to provide an actual example before I’ll believe it. I suspect you misread something which could explain a lot of the VERY wrong information you insist on giving here.
First, the credit card companies REQUIRE you to sign the back. The card is not suppose to be accepted without a signature. Sure, most places don’t even look, but still it is part of your agreement with the credit card company. It is a security feature.
Second, if someone steals your credit card, it is a lot easier for them to just sign your name to that blank spot than it would be to try to copy the signature on the card. Why make it easy for the crook?
